POST 7:Do we require more IITs and IIMs?
Recently in our annual budget we heard our finance minister saying that more IITs and IIMs will be opened.
The question is that whether there is a requirement of more number of IITs and IIMs.
If you ask a HR like me, the answer is definetely No.Keeping aside my profession if you ask then its still a No.
A student aiming to be a IIT or a IIM graduate is the only person to be happy about it.The probability of him getting to the top notch colleges of the country gets better if there are more of them. But more number of IITs and IIMs means they will surely lose their value in the long run.
If you look at the scenario 30 years ago,Engineering was considered a degree of great value. But now that has completely lost its value. The reason why is simple. The increase in the number of engineering college.
Out of the engineering students passing out every year only 15-20 % employable. Its the most pathetic state we can ever reach. The rest are just there with a degree. The same scenario will follow if there is a increase in IITs and IIMs.
IITs and IIMs are the colleges with a very high brand value.Imagine,Harvard University opens its colleges everywhere.Would the degree still hold the same value?Quite obvious,No.Similarly is the case with IITs and IIMs.Its about the quality education these institutes impart. So instead of focussing on increasing the number of IITs and IIMs,the focus should be on the quality of education imparted in the already existing colleges, whether its IIT or IIM or not.
The government needs to understand the reason behind such low employablity ratio and take steps to increase it.Job opportunities is very less compared to the passout ratio of the students.
Increasing more IITs and IIMs is not a solution.Impart good education and gear up the job market. That's the need of the day.
